What is Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is the first medication in a new class of drugs known as GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonists. Unlike older medications that only target one hormone, Mounjaro targets two, which helps regulate blood sugar and slow down digestion more effectively.
Key Benefits
-
Blood Sugar Control: It significantly lowers A1C levels in adults with type 2 diabetes.
-
Weight Management: Although FDA-approved for diabetes, clinical trials (such as SURMOUNT) showed that participants lost substantial weight, leading to a sister-brand version called Zepbound specifically for weight loss.
-
Cardiovascular Health: It is currently being studied for its potential benefits in reducing heart-related risks.
How is it Administered?
-
It is a once-weekly subcutaneous injection (injected under the skin of the stomach, thigh, or upper arm).
-
It comes in a single-dose pen with a hidden needle, making it relatively simple to use at home.
Common Side Effects
Most side effects are gastrointestinal and typically occur when first starting the medication or increasing the dose:
-
Nausea and vomiting
-
Diarrhea or constipation
-
Stomach pain and indigestion
-
Decreased appetite
Important Safety Information
-
Thyroid C-cell Tumors: Mounjaro has a boxed warning because it has caused thyroid tumors in animal studies. It should not be used by people with a personal or family history of Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma (MTC).
-
Pancreatitis: Patients should be monitored for signs of inflammation of the pancreas.
-
Hypoglycemia: While rare on its own, the risk of low blood sugar increases if used with other diabetes medications like insulin.
